Girls Night In: Valentines Edition

Lets be real… Valentines day can be a struggle. Whether you are in a relationship, single or “its complicated” you are bound to feel the pressure. Now we might not always be Valentines days biggest fans either, but we do love a good excuse to have a girls night in. As mentioned in our “What to do this month” post for February, we think Valentines day is an amazing excuse to get all your girlfriends together (including the ones in relationships) and have an amazing, insta-worthy girls night in. We put pinterest to the test and put together our own DIY girls night and wanted to share all of these amazing ideas with you.

1. Decor

Now whats a party without some amazing decor? Whether you just wanna look at it or you want to snap the perfect insta pic, its mandatory at any girls night. Here are some of out favourite DIY decor ideas that are super easy to put together and you probably already have most of the supplies.

Real talk for a second, you do not need fancy decorations to make your party Valentines ready. Find any scrap paper you have in your house, grab a pair of scissors and get to cutting. Any festive shape you can think of will work, we went with hearts and “XO’s” but you could definitely get creative with it. Stick your shapes to some fishing line to make garlands or simply scatter them around your space and you’ve instantly got a festive looking room. Add a few pink and red flowers (ours are fake) and a few bowls of coloured candy and you are all set, and you won’t have to break the bank either!

2. Snacks

As Valentines Day comes around the corner, chocolate and strawberries seriously take over my thoughts. It may be because I am a total foodie, or because I’m single and Valentines day minus a relationship leaves you with girl nights filled with chocolate and rom-coms. Yet trying to live on the healthy side, I prefer making an alternative that can benefit my overall wellbeing and leave me feeling fit.

Smoothie bowls have completely taken over our Instagram feed because of their health benefits and popping colours. They may look intimidating but they are seriously SO simple and and sold in the trendiest health stores. Luckily enough, you can make them at home without searching the streets of Vancouver and spending a fortune. It can be effortless to make a photogenic bowl that can be eaten for breakfast or dessert and satisfy your sweet tooth.

Making nutritious AND festive snacks is my favourite challenge and I am more than happy to share a few whole food, plant-based recipes that you can try this Valentines Day with your love or girlfriends!!

STRAWBERRIES & CHOCOLATE VEGAN SMOOTHIE BOWL

Okay, this creamy base is jam-packed with nutrients which makes it so much more enjoyable and will be satisfying until your next meal. Healthy carbs from the frozen banana and strawberries give you instant energy, and the nut/seed butter add healthy fats to keep you full as well as a boost of protien!

BASE- (serves two)
1 frozen banana
1 cup of frozen strawberries
1/2 cup raspberries
1/2 coconut milk (non-dairy milk of your choice)
1 tbsp almond butter (or nut/seed butter of your choice)

Place all your ingredients in the blender and blend till smooth. Make sure you freeze your fruit the night before to allow your base to be extra creamy. If you do not have a high speed blender, keep adding liquid till your frozen fruit can blend fully. Once completely blended, pour into a bowl.

TOPPINGS-

Now THIS is the fun part, bring out your creative side and decorate your bowl anyway you would like. These are a couple of topping options that add a flavourful crunch and complete the bowl. Treat yourself to this no-guilt desert with your girlfriends while enjoying a few chick flicks this V-day!

-a few squares of dark chocolate (over 70% for benefits)
-granola
-coconut
-any fruit of your choice (banana slices, strawberries, pomegranate etc)
-chia seeds
– coconut yogurt

PINK FRUIT SALAD

This foolproof recipe is extremely simple and can be made by anyone. Seriously. I LOVE snacking on fruit because it is hydrating, low in fat and nutrient dense! Plus it is so easy to make it look festive with using pink & red fruits and a heart shaped cookie cutter. You can easily leave this in your fridge and snack on it throughout the day & while hanging with your girlfriends. Definitely try this recipe out if you are short on time and want a sweet snack for V-Day!

INGREDIENTS-

-Watermelon
-Raspberries
-Strawberries-Any other fruit of your choice (cubed honey dew, cubed cantaloupe, pomegranate)!

Benefits- The watermelon in the salad is 92% water, helping you keep hydrated and feel full, not to mention the berries that are low in calories and high in fibre and antioxidants!

Cut the watermelon into slices and use your cookie cuter to make hearts out of your pieces of fruit. Wash and chop the strawberries, raspberries and other fruit of your choice. Place all your cut up fruit in a bowl, mix it up and it is ready to eat!
